Different & United By: Rohan Kalaria

We’re different. All of us. We look different. We talk different. We think different. We eat

different. Yet, together, we form one brotherhood. The motto of the United States is E Pluribus Unum, which translates to, out of many, one - this is the epitome of what our chapter is and represents. The National Football League released a commercial 3 years ago that discussed the differences inside the lines of the field but recognizing that there is far more that unites them.

There were many quotes from the 60 second ad spot that seem fitting to our chapter of Sigma Alpha Mu, but the among the top were:

“We don’t have to come from the same place, to reach the same destination”

“There’s no such thing as an easy yard, when you’re fighting to move forward”

“We are not only defined by our victories, but by the way we handle our defeats”

“We can bring out the best in each other, and live united”

Football, and Sammy to the same extent, are microcosms of America. We have different races, religions, and creeds under one framework and mission. Our brothers trace themselves back to every corner of the globe, and find themselves in one place working together towards bettering their individual self, the chapter, the university, the community, the city, and in turn are hoping that our small part and actions have magnifying effects. There is a saying this year in the NFL that is focused around racial injustice, “It Takes All of Us,” but the fact is that it doesn’t matter what you’re working towards or fighting for. If you don’t have a team and a network fighting for mass change and progress, then it is difficult to achieve. The brothers of our chapter of Sammy understand that it really does take all of us. It took all of us to survive when this chapter was struggling for brothers a decade ago, it took all of us to start making meaningful contributions to the school and the community, it took all of us to be recognized as the top chapter in our region and then subsequently it took all of us to be named the top chapter in the country.

We’re not done yet. It is going to continue to take all of us to find the next peak, and to reach it, together. Like any brothers do, we have differences, we don’t always see eye to eye, but at the end of the day we respect each other and understand we will always want what is best for this chapter, and for each other. We don’t ostracize or criticize a difference in opinions. We embrace and understand our differences to find better and unified solutions to move forward and achieve.

There is a misconception that every fraternity either fits one mold or their own mold. Being a Sammy you understand how false this notion truly is. Being a Sammy is about wanting to be a part of something that is bigger than yourself to better yourself, it’s about embracing being

different and thinking different. There is nothing more gratifying than being a part of a group that challenges you to look at things with a new perspective and forces you to grow.

It took all of us. It’s going to take all of us. We’re different. We know. We love it. Experience it. Rush Sammy.
